The CSIRO breeding programs aim to produce varieties for all the different growing situations in Australia.

This paper looks at some of the differences between raingrown and irrigated cotton in Central Queensland, in particular: differences in basic inputs and differences between major problem areas.

There are increasing areas of cotton grown in regions which are prone to cool seasons, eg. the Darling Downs, the upper Namoi and upper Macquarie valleys.
