Fibre quality is affected by a large number of interacting factors:variety, seasonal conditions, crop and harvest management, and ginning can all determine whether or not the spinner's requirementsare met. While some of these factors cannot be controlled, there are many that can. Through better understanding of the nature of fibre and the factors that affect its quality, improved varieties,management for each region's climate, and processing to minimise damage to fibre are all opportunities to improve the quality of fibre delivered to mills.

NUTRIpak is a manual of cotton nutrition, designed to inform cotton growers and consultants of theimportance of providing their crops with a sufficient supply of nutrients and improving their fertilizer management.

Despite several smaller than average seasons, all in a row, the cotton industry continues to break new ground in pest management. The 2008/09 season sees the introduction of new techniques for monitoring and determining thresholds for cotton aphid and silverleaf whitefly.Using IPM strategies that value the contribution of beneficials, incorporate economic thresholds andconsider the influence of rotation crops, weed hosts and remnant vegetation will assist in controlling production costs.

The information contained in this document is a distillation of results from research, conducted over the last decade, which investigated dry season cotton production in the ORIA. An intense effort has been made to understand the dynamics of both pest and benefi cial insects associated with winter grown cotton in the region, and to devise an integrated pest management (IPM) based approach to insect control which avoids the major pests. This has required the development of a new farming system and the characterisation of cotton's agronomic performance in the northern dry season.
