UNDERSTANDING EVAPORATION SHEET

Abstract

Right now, it is very difficult to accurately measure the water losses from evaporation on farm dams but a recent scoping study funded by the National Program for Sustainable Irrigation estimated the loss is as high as 7,000 gigalitres per year from Queensland's section of the Murray-Darling Basin alone. Given that water extracted from our waterways for all purposes is around 20,000 gigalitres per annum in the whole of Australia, the potential savings from addressing evaporation losses are obviously worth pursuing.

NPSI FACT SHEET 2005 / 2: IMPLEMENTING PARTIAL ROOTZONE DRYING

Abstract

The partial root zone drying (PRD) method of irrigation, originally developed for grapevines, is now being used in a range of perennial tree crops in Australia and achieving some exciting results in citrus and pears, as well as grapes. The technique requires that wet and dry root zones are created simultaneously around each plant.

MEASURING THE EFFECTS OF IMPROVING WATER USE EFFICIENCY ON ROOT ZONE SALINITY

Abstract

Since the end of 2003 a tri-state syndicate of government agencies from western NSW, Victoria and South Australia has been working on a strategy to manage this salinity hazard. This Research Bulletin draws on some of the findings to date, focusing on results of monitoring root zone salinity and deep drainage in sprinkler and drip-irrigated citrus orchards and vineyards.

IRRIGATION INSIGHT NO 5 WATER USE EFFICIENCY

Abstract

This publication forms part of the National Program for Sustainable Irrigation Irrigation Insights series. It explores some of the many facets of the term water use efficiency, and attempts to provide a simple, clear and concise guide to the topic. It also collates and summarises some of the current scientific and field knowledge, though with a rather 'Australia-centric' flavour. The publication was written to a brief that required the production of a compendium of current knowledge on water use efficiency that: *provides an explanation of and context for water use efficiency at a range of scales *reviews and assesses procedures for estimating water use efficiency *presents case studies and examples of water use efficiency estimation at a range of scales * reviews the current status of water use efficiency research and development. It is intended to appeal to a wide audience, from water users, through to academics, service sector, agencies and technocrats and, as such, is a practical, rather than theoretical, guide
